I was Denis Galloway’s roommate during our “Cow” and Firstie years in Company M-2. Denis was 6’2” and 220 lbs, lean! He had attended Washington University in St. Louis for two years before West Point, so he was high in our class and was commissioned in the Engineers. He was in a specially selected small class of top cadets along with Alex Hottell, Mike Leonard and other 5% “Star Men”. (I was not). As an aside and separate matter, Denis and I were however members of the Century Club having attained that honor by walking 100 hours of punishment tours on the “Area”. A separate story as to why.
Denis also belonged to the Glee Club later during our First Class year and had many weekends away from West Point where beaming mothers pushed their daughters towards cadets in Full Dress Grey! Denis also liked to sing and play the guitar and one of his favorite songs was Down in the Mines. Earlier while in confinement during weekends of Cow year when not walking Area tours we also built a fine collection of Delta and Chicago Blues records in the USMA Library, and learned some Lightning Slim Hopkins songs like Down on Tim Moore’s Farm and Baby Please Don’t Go.
Later while in Buttingen Germany he met a girl named Sigried whom he intended to marry. I have a picture of his black 1958 Corvette convertible kept at his family home in Elsberry,MO. His father Mr. Ralph Galloway kept up with our class for many years until his death.
Between tours in Vietnam I was assigned to 2nd Ranger Company near Dahlonega GA. SSG Fudge was there also and had been in Denis’ Platoon when Denis was killed during a mine/explosives clearing operation. He told me about the circumstances and told me Denis was physically participating in moving the armed devices to a demolition pit when one exploded. We lost a fine and brave classmate and young officer 24 October, 1966. I had been wounded up on the DMZ north of Dong Ha, evaced and recovering in 3rd Field Hospital when classmate Seth Hudgins somehow got a message thru to me that Denis had been killed. Denis was like a brother to me.
Jim Carson, 2022, now nearly 80 years old. Denis is forever young in my mind.
Clint: Denis was my classmate. He was one of the few who was loved corps wide. We were both in the First Brigade, 101st, in RNV. Give me an address and I send you some info on him.
